wild at heart

I just finished reading WIld at Heart, by John Eldredge, for the third or fourth time. I’ve read through it as a discussion book with other men a few times now. There are some conclusions in the book that I question, but I also really appreciate the fresh perspective he brings on manhood.
Here is a quote from the last chapter worth passing along. I mostly agree with it, though I do wonder how one can have an informal friendship with God that balances a healthy reverence. Even after all these years of being a follower of Jesus, I’m still not sure I fully understand how to embody what he describes below:
The only way to live in this adventure–with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes–is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God. The control we so desperately crave is an illusion. Far better to give it up in exchange for God’s offer of companionship, set aside stale formulas so that we might enter into an informal friendship.

I’ve been debating whether I should read this book or not. When I think about this book, it shouts out “Trent Renner” to me, since he read it several times and it seemed that every other sermon was about how men these days are castrated males or something to that effect. And since I really don’t want to be like Trent, I’ve avoided it like the plague. But what you wrote intrigues me, to say the least.
