free books!
Call me crazy, but for the last few decades, I’ve neglected to take advantage of my local library. Why? I really don’t know.
There are certain books worth owning, and you want to make notes in and keep for future reference. I’m all about that.
There are certain books that you just want to read because you are curious and you really don’t think they’ll have a long-term benefit for you. Is there any reason to pay full, or even used, prices for these? About a month ago, I went online and added myself to the wait list of our county library for Anne Rice’s Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt. Last week, I get an email telling me a copy is waiting for me at the branch that is five minutes from my house. Yesterday, I walked in and practically triped over the “Holds” shelf right inside the entrance that has my copy waiting on it. Three minutes later, I was out of there without spending a dime.
What an idiot I’ve been.

Hey John,
I made a similar discovery one summer when I wanted to read Corrie Ten Boom’s books. I couldn’t find some of them, so I went to the library and found all of them that I was looking for… like you said, without spending a dime. That was the same summer I read all of the Narnia books for free. I think with our internet friendly life these days, we forget to walk to the library and touch a free book!! Bonus, we get to talk to the librarian, bump into someone walking out while we’re walking in, say “excuse me”, smile, move on… etc.
Ahhh, the simplicities of life that we forget!!

I’ve discovered another free benefit of the library — books on tape. Whenever I go to the library, I get several books in hardcopy and a few on tape to listen to when I’m in the car. It usually beats the radio blah, blah, blah. In fact, when I took a big road trip last fall, I took along 6 books on tape. You can keep them for 3 weeks, so I had plenty of time to return them after traveling.

Don’t forget DVDs and videos. I found several movies that I have wanted to rent from Blockbuster (at 4 bucks a pop) that I can rent for free from the library.
